Hello Purchased 1940 new hudson for restoration, looking for a complete rear hub for the project, anybody help?..cheers. 1940 would be the old 26x2x13/4 size tyres (tradebike size) almost any autocycle rear wheel will fit. Both mine (1 sold on and the 1 I still have ) are backpedal brake, guess that was original ? probably hard to come by now.

There is 2 types of back pedal brakes I think: is yours the coaster hub (i think that's what it's called) that expands in the centre or normal shoes that operate by teeth that have to line up with the actuator arm.

the problem i have is not the brake operation,..its the hub is in constant free wheel or jumps out of engagement..so basicaly when i peddle to start the engine it wont do the job of driving the main drive chain to the engine

I don't have any information specific to the New Hudson but, in general, back-pedal hubs work in two ways. One is with a sliding clutch (this is usually on the brake drum type). There's a drag spring on the sliding clutch and this spring is the prime suspect if it doesn't work properly. The other sort has a sprag clutch that traps rollers (or balls) between converging surfaces and the first thing to try on this sort is a good clean out and re-lubrication.
