Having just had a new Schwalbe tyre on my Spartamet tyre wheel explode after 20 miles, can anyone recommend a suitable heavy duty tyre that would be safe to use?

I'm surprised at that - I regularly ride a tandem fitted with Schwalbe Marathons and they have lasted for hundreds of miles. (Though, as seems to be common with Schwalbe, they're not the easiest tyres to fit.)
Nowadays, many tyre makers are producing heavier tyres that are meant for electric bikes; they ought to be suitable but I can't offer experience of any particular make.

The problem seems to be the profile of the cast alloy wheel rim. The sides are smooth, it is not a clincher rim as I think many bikes are. I have heard that others have had Schwalbe tyres fail in the same way. Sadly I have disposed of the old tyre that I wore out over several years and I cannot remember what it was!
By the way, when I fitted the Schwalbe I was not too pleased at the ease with which it slipped on, without the need for levers.

(Though, as seems to be common with Schwalbe, they're not the easiest tyres to fit.) Me too. I've ridden thousands of bicycle miles on Schwalbe tyres without problems. I have worn out one set of Schwable tyres on my solo bike and have put a couple of thousand miles on the set on our tandem. The Marathon plus is my tyre of choice.
What is the metric size of a Spartamet rim?

There are two sizes: 559x24 and 590x24, which are meant for 50-559 and 37-590 tyres respectively. I must admit that all my experiences of Schwalbe have been on 622s.

The figures 24 x 590 are cast into the rim. It may be that my Schwalbe tyre was defective as it all started with wire erupting out of the side wall. Anyway after reading about others' problems with incompatibility on this and another forum I am reluctant to trust another one. Have fitted a Chinese made Raleigh and it seems to be OK so far.
