Hello, I am trying to find out exactly how old my recently purchased Excelsior Autobyk is. I have a frame/chassis no, the registration number and original tax discs going back to 1951. I was told that it is a 1948 bike when I bought it, but I want to check as I going to apply for a V5.

Unfortunately registration number and tax discs are not accepted by DVLA these days it has to be documentary evidence linking to the frame ie Old log book or council records.
If you don't have an old card log book what is the reg? we maybe able to point you in the direction of the original registration authority but don't hold your breath it's a long shot even if they know when it was first registered more often than not there is no frame number recorded.
You could ask Andrew for a dating certificate but not sure if your bike is complete enough to register yet? DVLA does like it to be complete with no major components missing (but it doesn't have to be running).

Tell us the numbers and we'll tell you how old it is (If you're paranoid about revealing them on-line, AX/22nn and ABC 1nn is good enough).
