Hi I've just purchased a bodged cyclemaster which will run but the accelerator is variable to say the least. It is reasonably happy at full chat anything lower and it will hunt and or die altogether, it seems to need choke at all times. I suspect leaking crankshaft oil seals or disc valve damage? Does anybody know of a probable cause?

I'd check the carb first its a lot simpler than pulling the engine apart! If it needs choke, I assume it's an Amal carb as that has a choke, unlike the BEC. Needing choke could mean a blocked jet. Also, check that the engine doesn't need a de-carb.

Thanks James for your reply, I had stripped and cleaned the carburettor, I'm pretty sure it doesn't need a decoke. I've been able to blow down the inlet manifold and once the engine is turned to allow air through the disc valve disc I can hear it blowing into the generator/clutch cover. It doesn't on a spare engine I have, so I think I have solved the mystery of lack of power and difficult stating running.

I can hear it blowing into the generator/clutch cover. That sounds as if you've found the problem!

Yes, found the fault(s) of which are many. Missing the right hand blank over crankshaft main bearing end, also no cylinder base gasket or head gasket at all, really rough main bearings, incorrect final drive chain which was fouling the hub.quite a few other non related cycle faults which for a cyclemaster sold by one of your/our members as a runner is diabolical.
