I’ve fitted pistons to car engines before so know the principles etc. However bike engines are new to me.
So I’m fitting new rings to a Laura m48. Engine is on bench. Is it easier to fit barrel back over piston, with the piston still attached to the rod, or take piston off , insert in barrel then reattach the piston to the rod after getting it started in the barrel?
What is best by your experience?

I have used both methods, with a single cylinder lightweight barrel holding the rings tight in the groove and sliding the barrel over is quite easy, if the piston has pegs in the grooves make sure they are located correctly. Also make sure the gaps in the rings are the correct size before fitting, whichever method you use always put a rag around the con rod so nothing falls inside the crankcases. Slow and careful and you should have no problems, good luck

Thanks. As it’s on the bench I’m hoping it’s going to be a bit easier. So I’m going with leaving piston on and try sliding barrel over. I’m considering using a cable tie around the rings to squeeze them in then push that down with barrel. Like using a piston ring clamp in reverse.

Well rings are successfully on and in! Was a proper fiddle. I’m not used to such small components! 😂

Great, it is always more satisfying to complete a job when it has been challenging, good luck with the rest
