Dear Forum,
If I had any hair I would be tearing it out. My normally reliable Mobylette AV 42 started to misfire. I started with the usual cures - thoroughly cleaned the carb, plug etc. Had the HT coil and condenser (new) checked and fitted new plug and cap. Changed the cable from the LT coil to the HT coil. Took the engine out of the frame and ran on bench - swapped carburettor with a known working one. Still misfires. When observing the plug while spinning the engine with a drill the spark looks constant and consistant. The exhaust is OK. Having checked the HT coil and condenser Mark Daniels is now checking the LT coil. If that comes back OK (which I expect it will) does the forum have any other ideas?? Robert Barnard

Just a thought: head gasket okay? Head tight?

Thank you for the suggestion - sadly the head is tight. Could it be crank-case seals??

Is your fuel fresh? I have just cured my Morris Minor misfire problems by topping up with fresh fuel, I had about a 1/4 tank of 6 month old fuel, after putting a couple of gallons of fresh E5 in it went back to normal sweet running. I have a gallon of same age fuel I was about to add 2 stroke mixture to fire up a Villiers junior engine, that will now be used for cleaning purposes. I believe new fuel starts to deteriorate after 3 months.
Hope this helps

Checked the Novi coil pin that the lead pushes into? I had a friends who misfired and the pin had gone so the spark was jumping the gap.
If the condenser is new is it the same type and inside the magneto. Most running these Mobylettes get a 12v one for something like a mk1 mini and mount it externally.
Otherwise find someone locally who knows these engines to come and have a look. Where are you?

Thank you for all your suggestions.
I've tried a variety of coils all of which have been tested as working, new plug and condenser, the fuel is new, the low tension coil has now been tested and is fine.
I will check timing but as the bike ran fine up until recently I doubt this is the problem.
I intend to re-assemble very carefully and try again.
I live in Kingston upon Thames if any experts live near by!

Take a good look at the contact breaker. Is the spring strong enough? Is the moving part perfectly free on the pivot. Are the insulating washers for the connecting wire in good condition?
