1941 would be my best guess - but there was a war on. Probably made in 1940 but not released into the wild until '41 when some essential worker obtained a permit for one.

Is it possible to get a dating cert Not until you get some wheels ... it should at least look like an autocycle before you get the dating certificate. Once it's complete then there should be no problem with the certificate. I'm guessing there's no trace of its original registration, so you'll be after an age-related number, in which case there's no point in registering it until it's ready for the road. What's the engine like? Restorable? If there's a possibility that you'll need to put another engine in it, that would be another reason for waiting before you get the certificate.

That confirms the date: a 1940 engine ... but one that might not have emerged on a production autocycle until later in the war.

The engine will rebuild I'm sure. I want to have a oily rag build using as much original parts as I can but I will strip it all down to do a mechanical job. I just hope I can find some wheels. I might also need a tank as this one is really badly squashed. I'm amazed how good it really is.
