I have two mudguards that have black paint and rust patches on the surface. I would like to retain as much of the original finish as possible but smooth down the rust patches. I'm thinking soapy water and very fine wet and dry. Is that the best way to go or can you suggest an alternative.

Is the intention to clear coat it?

No. My idea is to get an overall smooth surface and wipe WD40 or something similar over it.

I like to keep the original finish where possible (patina) including the rust but as you say smooth the rust (dont try to remove all of it ) with wet n dry & soapy water then use the oily rag or ACF50 as it will last longer than wd40

Only ever used wet and dry once and never again! but that was on a Gold Wisp, took some paint off and it looks terrible touched up.
Like I say that was on a Gold Wisp that would almost be impossible to match anyway and would of looked better with the scabs, Black may not be so bad.

On the subject of wet n dry…… don’t. Use wire wool. It’s quicker, not as harsh and more controllable.

I have been using stainless steel kitchen scour ere dry on the really bad bits where no paint survived. Will give that a go with soapy water.
