Hi everyone,
i have just acquired a project trojan mini-motor which is nearly up and running. I have a few problems if anyone can help?
- The motor came attached to a New Hudson Bicycle but it was so worn out, I have put it onto a hercules Balmoral instead. I want to get the bike road legal- however, the V5 states the bike is a Mini Motor new Hudson. Will the bike need to be re-registered?
- The other problem i have is that the Taxation class on the V5 is listed as 'Not licensed'. How can i go about changing its taxation class so i can use it on the road? I have seen advise from some that if I can get it MOT'd I can then change this with the DVLA. I have found no information at all from the DVLA and seeing as the bike is working, would love to try it on the road.
Many, many thanks

When and only when you are ready to use it on the road, after you have insured it Tax it at the Post Office. Fill in the changes section on the V5C they should tax it and send the document to Swansea (take a VII2 form with you sometimes they ask to see it)

Getting the thing re-registered would be a nightmare Especially as a Hercules Balmoral won't be "an appropriate age for the cyclemotor unit". I don't quite understand the need to change the bike; why not keep the New Hudson and replace the worn bits? Having the Hercules to rob the parts from gives you a good start for this.

The reasoning was that the New Hudson was in a terrible state and the Hercules is in very good condition indeed. It would be a shame to destroy a good bike to fix and pretty poor one. I was told by someone that the motor is the bit registered and not the bike itself. I guess that isn't the case. Which is annoying as it looks really good on the Hercules!

That was the case back in the 1950s ... and it can still sort of be the case on some 'converted' registrations where the recorded make is the make of the engine unit just the engine number appears on the V5. However, the very fact that yours has 'New Hudson' recorded in the registration details shows that it's no longer the case for your bike.

Interesting, have visited the DVLA website and entered the registration of the bike. It was first registered in 2009! Not 1953 as was the year of manufacture. Is this possibly the second bike it has been on? Would love to know the history all the way back to 1953.

Presumably 2009 was when it was re-registered either with it's original number or an age related number. Long shot finding it's history, used to be able to pay DVLA for information they held but data protection has stopped all that and you don't even get the previous owner on the V5C now.
