I had been thinking about doing a big run near to the longest day for a while, the few people I mentioned it to didn’t seem interested (more sense maybe!). The photogenic Bown was the chosen stead but it wasn’t looking good when it conked 3 times just a few days before, the jet/centre piece in the carb being its Achilles heel (more about that later).
Anyway if you’re going to do this there is only 1 day Monday 21st June this year and I wasn’t really prepared, the weather forecast was mainly cloudy. I didn’t set off until the busy school run was happening and I hadn’t checked temperature and wind. It was nice when stopped but bl**dy freezing when riding, I arrived at Swanton Morley and called to see my friend Keith G just before hyperthermia set in, after a cuppa and chat I warmed up and headed back home and put the bike in the car.
Longest day+1 I drove back to S M unloaded the bike and set off again, a stop at Castle Rising and all was well (there is another story about me breaking down there in 2019) and onto West Walton, nothing exciting there except an interesting church where the church and steeple are separate and a view across a smelly river, Cambridgeshire being on the other side. Heading back and a check on the route and give my neck a much needed rest, what a surprise to have Barrie B pull up, I hadn’t seen him since he moved about 5 years ago, I followed him back to his new home for a nice catch up. Back to Swanton Morley and mission completed. East Somerton to West Walton 80 miles and return (albeit over 2 days and a 40 mile drive) much chatting and a Magnum X Jumped in the car to follow me home.

Happy if cold Days.
