I am considering buying a moped, the bike has a v5 but a check with the dvla shows that it has not been taxed since 1982. I have no intention of transferring the number but the seller wants a premium for the "transferrable number plate" My understanding is that a machine has to have been taxed or SORNed for 5 consecutive years prior to the transfer and that I will only get an age related, non-transferable number and even that is not a rubber stamp job-Am I correct in this case?

Ask to see the V5C Any new document will be the same as the old ie If it doesn't say so it will be transferable, none transferable will say so. Age related is a completely different scenario that's when a vehicle is not registered. Not sure about that 5 year rule but vehicle has to have an MOT before it's transferred (even if it is 40years exempt).
