Hi everyone, I've just joined the club after getting my first autocycley thing, a 1954 Excelsior Autobyk Super 2 speed (slow & slower). So i'm new to all this (confession time: I didn't know what an autocycle was until I got one!) and I was actually looking for a 1970s Honda moped when the Wilfred caught my eye and I was hooked. Anyhow, my first question is, what is the best autocycle? i.e. the most usable one as I intend to do quite a few long runs. Should I stick with the G2 or is there something better out there? I've sort of gone off the moped idea now as I'm smitten with the autocycle

Quick answer Bown Autoroadster. I acquired a G2 in 2019 but I haven't even started it yet. I only know of one that is used regularly on runs and when I see him changing gears I wonder if it is really worth it. I would recommend any Autocycle with the Villiers 2f engine (except the New Hudson Restyle) as being easy to work on and for availability of spares.

Yes I think spares availability will be an issue for mine, I may just have to get something else for the long runs and keep the autobyk for the shows. I haven't had a good run in mine yet as its hard to find a dry day at the moment, will have to see how this gear changing goes at speed, did I just use the word speed!

5 on the Bown and 2 on the New Hudson just because I could. Neither missed a beat and more importantly *not touched by a spanner"

Well for that sort of run I think I would resort to the BMW, I thought it was an old bike being 21 but it's now just a young thing compared to the 66 year old Autobyk

Well Dave don't know much about autocycle.but have always liked you BOWN.for it's looks and performance.my mate Derrick as 2new Hudson's.a1949 and an early fifties one.and both run well.but as I don't own one best left to get opinions of those who know these machines inside out.

I saw the reg G2 BYK for sale and thought that would be perfect for mine then remembered the autobyk is too old to carry that reg (in Northern Ireland we don't have any age restrictions on plates)
