I have been doing a few shakedown runs on my Lion Rouge moped (Sachs 50-2) and have to realise I don't live in the optimum place for it. Halifax is rather hilly in every direction and any flattish road is overrun with 18 wheelers, so to be fair to the moped I need to transport it to somewhere more suitable, like East Yorkshire. To get to the point.... how do others transport a moped? I have a motorcycle trailer but it is a bit of overkill for the LR, I was thinking of a tow bar bolt on rack as used for transporting off road bikes but am not sure if it would be suitable....or even if I could lift the bike high enough to load it.
Any recommendations?...….GrahamH

I wouldn't want to be without my Citroen Berlingo (other make/models are available) 1, 2 or 3 1/2 Autocycles in there, use the cushions for a stopover.

Hello Graham What a super moped,i have a couple of Flandria mopeds fitted with sachs engines and find them good strong motors. In reply to your transport issue have a lllk on the icenicam website under marketplace.might be just what you need.

Hello Graham In reply to your transport issue have a lllk on the icenicam website under marketplace.might be just what you need. I used to have a rack like that one on IceniCAM [1] - it'll take a moped or an autocycle. Quite easy to get the bike onto - you can lift the front wheel in, then lift the back wheel - no need to do it all in one go. [1] Technically, I still have, but it's on long term loan to a friend - my current car has no tow-bar.

I started off with a Kangoo (the Mighty Kangoo) which may have influenced others to buy similar vehicles. This was a superb van / estate / car / beast of burden. Then I had a Doblo, wider than the Kangoo but nowhere near as useful. Now I have a Nissan NV200, a marvelous machine and very versatile. 7 seats, plenty of room and no bigger than a saloon car when parking.

The rack started life as a professionally made trials bike carrier then modified to suit the Lion Rouge. All went well with the rack, the bike ran OK over a 20 mile run....but it sure takes some getting used to, hand change gears, back pedal brake and a touch of the wobbles! ............GrahamH

I found it on Ebay then reworked it to fit the moped. It would have been easier if I had access to a welder but it was all done with a hacksaw and bolts.

I bought one on eBay too. But left the wide motorcycle tyre slots and just made some wooden inserts to take the much narrower moped tyres. Then shortened the adjustable bar job done.
You do need to check the towbar and vehicle maximum hook weight. My car has a maximum of 150kg but some area lot more My Mobylette is about 55kgs but I know some mopeds weigh a bit more.

Hmmm.. so if my current car, a Skoda Fabia has a noseweight (whatever that is) of 50kg, is that the weight of machine i can carry on the tow hitch if i use a rack ?

That's what I was told. Nose weight is what they call the weight you can put on the towbar ball. Thats does seem a little light though. Talk to your towbar supplier for proper advice.

I would expect the quoted nose weight would be calculated with a car full of people and luggage. With the Golf, with just two people and very little extra load, the rear suspension only looks to be very lightly compressed and there is no noticeable difference in driving. As a comparison when we have fully loaded the car with everything for a holiday then the front of the car tends to point skywards, but with just the moped...no problem.
