I have been restoring my third Mobylette and detailing progress on the proboards forum. Now Mr W has suggested I share some of the fun I have been having here. I have previously restored an AV42 and a Cady only keeping the first as I didn't much like the iosdyne engine on the Cady
I bought this 50v off of a friend in Skegness who has restored loads of Mobylettes and had two of these for sale. This one had the engine in two plastic tubs in bits. He promised it was all there and it was.
The carb was pretty dirty :-)
But the Magneto was in much better condition once cleaned up of course
The ripped saddle was repaired and all the rusty parts treated and painted
The engine was rebuilt with new seals, bearings and rings.
The frame was checked over, the tank given the vinegar treatment and primed
The painted in RAL5009 Blue
I got new rims from Danny and rebuilt the wheels
Front forks were stripped and rebuilt and a new steering lock fitted (source Danny again)
Then the fun part as I reassembled the frame.
All the electrics were cleaned and the frame was rewired
The variator was fun to get apart but I finally managed it
Even had a go at makiing my own tank badges (mines the bottom one)
After reassembling and fitting a NOS new stand supplied by a friend I noticed a problem can you see it?
It was from a different model so both wheels touched the ground. Doah!!
A friend welded a couple of 16mm extension rods in for me after I filed out the feet giving it another 40mm height
I then filled in the gaps with filler so it didn't collect dirt etc repainted it and refitted. Result
Finally tried to start it after putting some "EasyStart" (Ether) in the plug hole. It fired instantly and then stopped. Plug dry checked the carb again and found little fuel in the float chamber, so cleaned it all again and found the plastic slow running screw was broken, but that wouldn't stop it starting. Tried the one from an old carb but that was too long so made one.
Tried it again and it runs like a dream starting on half a pedal turn.
Here are a couple of videos, note the smoke from the intial start still hasn't cleared. :-)
There you go Dave....
